Project Work

Wikipedia in the Classroom

Human Computer Interaction Institute, Carnegie Mellon University

May - July 2011

The use of Wikipedia in the classroom opens up new ways of teaching, learning and producing knowledge. Writing assignments involving students to write or improve upon relevant Wikipedia articles, offer a richer experience than traditional classroom assignments. The MediaWiki software that runs the Wikipedia projects, however, does not provide any support for such activities as it has been written to serve a different purpose altogether, i.e., to support volunteer contributions to the online encyclopedia. This makes it difficult to organize data and track edits made by the students in a classroom setting. The project aims to bridge this gap by building a set of tools that enable collaborative wiki writing activities for classroom work.

Cross Lingual Article Similarity

IIIT-H & CMU

Nov - Dec 2010

Developed a system to flag inconsistencies found in Wikipedia infoboxes across articles written in different languages, as part of the winter school conducted by IIIT-Hyderabad and Carnegie Mellon University. The project involved studying the various limitations of machine translation techniques and methods to overcome them. Various language characteristics like homophones, synonyms and synsets were taken into consideration. An evaluation of the proposed approach demonstrates promise that such a tool could substantially reduce the effort in bridging the gap between the language specific communities on Wikipedia.

Erabase

NITK, Surathkal

Nov - Dec 2010

A cross-platform tool to draw ER Data Models and convert them into a relational database, completed as a part of the Database Systems mini-project. The UI consists of a drag and drop interface for drawing the models which are then converted to relational tables, normalised and an SQL database is generated automatically. Was awarded the top grade in class. Uses Qt and MySQL.

Augmented Air Hockey

NITK, Surathkal

July - Oct 2010

To design and implement a low cost augmented reality based game of air hockey on an interactive surface table. It presents a new approach for playing the game using physical mallets and a virtual puck. It involves a real-time object tracking with a web camera, providing haptic and auditory feedback, and simulating the dynamics of a real air hockey table. It also provides interesting enhancements like playing the game over a distance and extending the game for more than two players.
